Substitute Teaching

Thank you for your interest in Substitute Teaching at Branchburg Township School District.

To become a Substitute Teacher/Substitute Instructional Aide at Branchburg Township School District, you must complete the following process:

  • Complete the Substitute Teacher Application found on our Employment Opportunities page. 
  • Human Resources will review your application and reach out to qualified candidates for an interview.
  • Upon completion of your interview with Human Resources and a reference check, you will receive a new hire packet from the district to complete.
  • The new hire packet will include the criminal history/fingerprinting process (details listed below) as well as the Medical Examination and Mantoux Test paperwork.
  • Human Resources will assist you in obtaining your Substitute Teaching Certification if you do not currently hold one.
  • You will then be approved by the Board of Education to become a Substitute Teacher/Substitute Instructional Aide in the district pending onboarding documentation.
  • After you have been board approved by the Board of Education and all of your documents have been submitted/approved, you are eligible to be a Substitute in the district.

Teaching Certification:

  • If you hold a valid New Jersey Teaching Certification, you do not need to seek a County Substitute Certification.

Applying for a County Substitute Certification:

Human Resources will assist you in completing the items listed below. Upon completion of the items below, Human Resources will send these items on your behalf to the county office for the issuance of your certification.

  • Substitute credential application.
  • Notarized Oath of Allegiance form (this form is included in your new hire packet that you receive from Human Resources, HR can notarize on your behalf).
  • Sealed college transcripts proving at least 60 college credit hours (substitute credential) OR signed letter from employer documenting work experience (CTE substitute credential only).
  • Approved criminal history status check (instructions regarding the fingerprint process in the section below).
  • $125 Certificate Fee by Check or Money Order payable to The Commissioner of Education.

Criminal History Review/Fingerprinting Process:

  • The Office of Student Protection conducts criminal history background checks on applicants for positions in the New Jersey’s public schools.

  • Please proceed as the applicant that is applicable to you. If you’re unsure of which applicant you would be, please contact Human Resources at (908)722-3335 Ext: 4720.

Substitute Nurse:

Substitute Nurse applicants must apply for a County Substitute Certificate if you do not hold a School Nurse certification. You do not need to provide college/university transcripts, but you will need to bring in your current nursing license.
