Middle School Reading Strategies
What Middle School Reading Strategies Should My Child Use?
“When your child reaches middle school, he or she will be assigned a lot of reading from content area textbooks in social studies and science. Reading these texts is challenging because many textbooks are written at an advanced reading level and contain technical vocabulary words. The following middle school reading strategies can help your child read them successfully.
· Encourage your child to look at the chapter objective, which is usually stated at the beginning of the chapter. He or she should also scan any caption or topic headings. This strategy will help your child get a sense of the chapter's content before reading.
· While reading, your child should stop after every paragraph or page and summarize what he or she read. Have him or her take notes, which can help later when he or she is studying for a test.
· After reading, let your child complete the questions at the end of the chapter, even if they haven't been assigned for homework. These questions will let him or her check for understanding.”
