Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS)

All the schools in the BranchburgSchool system utilize a school-based team which designs and monitors the implementation of strategies for the education of non-classified pupils.

The major function of this team is to design and recommend potential intervention for non-classified pupils experiencing difficulties in their regular classes.  The child’s teachers select the actual interventions.  The interventions could include curricular changes for the pupil, new instructional materials or methods, or other assistance provided in the regular education program.  The interventions are designed to assist individual non-handicapped pupils with learning or behavior problems so they will be able to succeed.

The composition of the membership of the team in each school is slightly different.  In some of the schools an administrator chairs the committee;  In others the guidance counselors serve in this role. In all of the schools are representatives from the instructional staff, guidance and child study team.

The most commonly asked question is: Who should be brought to this committee?  The answer is any non-classified pupil who is experiencing difficulty in the teacher’s class.  The student may have learning or behavioral difficulties; however the referral is made when a teacher realizes that a student is not meeting with success.

This forum provides the teacher support built on a collegial relationship, which helps provide a number of strategies to utilize in providing the best education possible for all children.  If you have any additional questions or need to initiate a referral see the principal and/or guidance counselor.
