Whiton Elementary 2nd Graders Go “Bowl”-ing to Fight Hunger

On May 17th,Whiton Elementary School hosted its annual Empty Bowls Project benefiting TheFood Bank Network of Somerset County. Students and staff alike put their artistic skills to work transformingclay to beautiful bowls that were then raffled off to an enthusiasticaudience. Proceeds from the raffles anda silent auction totaled $4,219.
In addition to the moneycollected, 1,271 boxes of macaroni and cheese were donated to help feed thechildren of Somerset County over the summer. Volunteers packed their cars to deliver the boxes – with perfecttiming. Once there, volunteers wereinformed that The Food Bank Network had recently run out of macaroni andc heese.
“Summer can be an especiallychallenging time for families with young children who during the school yearmay receive free food service from their school. By helping to ensure our community membersare not faced with an empty bowl at meal time, our students have learned avaluable lesson in caring,” said Rebecca Gensel, Principal of Whiton ElementarySchool. “I am extremely proud of ourkids and the success they brought to this project.”
Using the bowls they had createdfor the project, the second graders were treated to ice cream provided bySundaes Sweet Shop of Branchburg to celebrate their accomplishments.
